Ensemble MidtVest (Artistic Advisor Sergio Azzolini) is looking for a new general manager as of 1 October 2017.

We are looking for an experienced and ambitious administrative director with musical knowledge and a network as well as the political flair to advance and develop Ensemble MidtVest’s position as one of Europe’s leading chamber ensembles.


As our new general manager you will be expected to assume responsibility for

  • everyday operations and management of the ensemble’s permanent staff, three administrative employees and eleven musicians
  • the ensemble’s budget and financial management
  • the signing of contracts with among others guest artists, concert venues and festivals
  • overall artistic planning in close cooperation with the ensemble’s programming committee
  • negotiations with the Danish Foundation for the Arts and the four owner-municipalities in close collaboration with Herning City Council, which is the supervising municipality
  • ongoing support and strengthening of the ensemble’s network at both the strategic and the musical level – locally, regionally, nationally and internationally
  • ensuring strong relations with the owner-municipalities, the local community and the public

We are looking for an administrative director who

  • is responsive and empathetic in management style and a good team player
  • has artistic visions and is ambitious on behalf of the ensemble
  • has a good musical network, nationally and internationally
  • understands the interaction and balance between firm local roots and high ambitions as regards international visibility
  • has a political flair for, understanding of and willingness for close collaboration with the local owner-municipalities and citizens
  • has a good musical overview and understanding of the artistic thinking and mentality in the classical music milieu
  • has a good understanding of the public and is open to innovative thinking on audience development
  • is an able communicator and mediator to different target groups

All applicants will be required

  • to have documented experience of general and financial management and fundraising, for example from a similar position in the cultural sector
  • to communicate satisfactorily in Danish or to be willing to learn the language quickly
  • to be fluent in English and preferably also German in writing and speech at negotiation standard
  • to maintain a regular presence in Herning and throughout the whole region of Middle and Western Jutland and to participate in the ensemble’s nationwide and international touring activities

Salary according to qualifications and other terms of employment to be agreed in more detail. The general manager will be accountable to the Chair of the Board.

Ensemble MidtVest, founded in 2002, is a professional chamber music ensemble based at the art museum HEART in Herning, where it has its own concert hall. The ensemble consists of a string quartet, a wind quintet and a pianist, and plays c. 100 concerts a year. Besides the Classical-Romantic repertoire and more recent and contemporary composition music, the ensemble has worked intensively for more than ten years with free improvisation. Since 2014 Sergio Azzolini has been the ensemble’s artistic consultant in the development of updated methods of performing Baroque music.

Ensemble MidtVest has just embarked on an ambitious audience development project ranging over several years.

Ensemble MidtVest appears regularly with high-profile artists in chamber music. The ensemble engages in extensive touring activities and has performed in the UK, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Greece, Brazil, Canada and the USA, including at Musikfestspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schloss Elmau, Kings Place and Carnegie Hall.

To date the ensemble has released 20 CDs, mainly on Dacapo Records, cpo and Naxos.

Ensemble MidtVest is an independent institution which receives regular operating support from the Danish Arts Foundation and the four owner-municipalities Herning, Holstebro, Ikast-Brande and Struer.
