In summer 2014, the Italian bassoon player Sergo Azzolini was appointed as artistic advisor to the Ensemble MidtVest, focusing on the early classical music in particular.
Sergio Azzolini is one of the most innovative and versatile bassoonists of our time. He was born in 1967 in Bolzano in Italy and began his studies in his home town with Santi Romano at the Music Academy ”Claudio Monteverdi”. Lateron, he studied with Klaus Thunemann at the Music Academy in Hannover. At the same time, he was a solo bassoon player in the European Union Youth Orchestra.
Sergio Azzolini has won many prestigious competitions. Among these the Carl Maria von Weber Competition, the ‘Prague Spring’ Festival’s competition and the ARD Competition in Munich. Throughout ten years he was a member of the Ma’alot Quintet.
Alongside with his solo career as a bassoon player on the modern instrument, Sergio Azzolini has played Baroque music on period instruments. As a baroque bassoonist, he is a member of the continuo group of the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges, conducted by Christophe Coin. As a soloist, he performs regularly with ‘I Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca’, ‘L’ Aura Soave di Cremona’ and ‘La Stravaganza’ (Köln). Desuden er han fast medlem i kammerensemblet ’Parnassi Musici’.
From 2002 to 2007, Sergio Azzolini held a post as artistic advisor to the Kammerakademie Potsdam. Together with the musicians of this orchestra, he explored and performed numerous both baroque and contemporary works. Moreover, he conducted three very succesful opera productions: ‘La fida Ninfa’ by Antonio Vivaldi, ‘Le nozze di Dorina’ by Baldassare Galuppi and, in 2010, ‘Montezuma’ by Karl Heinrich Graun. In 2011, Sergio Azzolini conducted the Kammerakademie again in a staged version of Mozart’s “Le nozze di Figaro” in Potsdam.
Sergio Azzolini has recorded a great number of CDs that have gained him many prestigious prizes and show his extraordinary stylistical diversity. Currently, he works on a complete recording of Antonio Vivaldi’s 39 bassoon concertos for Naïve’s Vivaldi Edition.
Since 1998, Sergio Azzolini has been a bassoon and chamber music professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel.
